10 Quick Tips to Get Motivated Now
How do you motivate yourself to get back to crushing the goals you have set? Do you have a system in place for when you get off track? Or do you just wait for motivation to strike whenever it pleases? Do you allow yourself to get off track for months or do you take the bull by the horns and push through when you just don’t feel like doing what you need to do? Maybe you need some quick tips to get motivated in case you hit a wall in achieving your goals.
Over the past couple years, I have tried a few different things to really help me reingnite my motivation to get back on track to achieving my BIG goals. I know it is tough to stay focused and Lord knows it is easy to get distracted, but implementing the steps I am going to give you in this post may help you get your mojo back.
First, I want you to consider a few things.
- Make sure you aren’t setting unreasonable goals- this will kill your motivation faster than anything
- Break down your BIG goals into tiny goals if you have to
- Take one goal at a time- don’t start a business, set a goal to lose 50 pounds and vow to budget every penny all at the same time. It just can’t happen all at the same time. Pick one goal and stick to it.
- Breathe- Don’t get frustrated and give yourself some grace. So you gained some weight back or got off track with your budget- it’s ok. We all do. Just forgive yourself and move on. Don’t dwell on the past, start creating your future.
I know it can be super tough to stay on track. We all have super busy lives and hopefully the tips below will help out just a little:) You can also print out this free list of ways to get motivated!
10 Things You Can Do to Get Motivated Quickly:
Create a very small to do list.
Think of something super easy that you have been meaning to get done. Go do it. Do it now. Don’t think about it, get up and do it now. The sooner you get something accomplished the better you will feel and the more motivated you’ll feel. Start writing down a few other tasks. Take one task on that list and continue completing it until it is completely done. Try to target 3 things you can get done today. The key is completing the tasks. Don’t just get something partially done, make sure it is entirely done.
Get up and get moving.
Either go exercise for 10 to 15 minutes or put on some loud music and start dancing around your house. Whenever we release endorphins, we instantly feel like we have more energy and we feel like we can accomplish more. (If you think that’s silly, get up and try it now!)
Read something inspiring.
If you have a favorite motivational author, pick up one of their books and read some of your favorite quotes from that book. Often, this will help get you re-focused and help you get motivated.
Write in a journal.
This helps me especially if I’m sad or overwhelmed. If I write my thoughts down it seems to really release my brain from those overwhelming thoughts and I can get back to focusing on the task at hand. Often, when we have too much on our minds if we “brain dump” and get everything out, it is like decluttering our minds and we are able to get re-centered.
If you aren’t sure how to do this, you can watch a quick video on YouTube or you can use an app like Headspace that guides you through meditation. Sometimes we just need to clear our minds in order to focus on what needs to take priority.
Set a timer.
This is by far one of the biggest tricks I have learned as far as efficiency. We all have this innate sense of wanting to be better and do better (competition!). When you are racing against a timer to get stuff done, it is actually incredibly motivating in that you want to accomplish everything you set out to accomplish prior to that timer going off.
Go for a short walk.
Yes, this is about movement again, but it is also about giving yourself time and silence. Sometimes we need a break from all that surrounds us to really be able to focus. Don’t listen to music. Don’t walk with a friend. Just walk alone and think.
Take a break from social media.
It is so easy to compare our lives to others through social media. It is easy to get overwhelmed and feel like we are not good enough. It is easy to feel like our lives will never compare to someone else’s. Your life is completely unique and different and if you feel like you’re constantly comparing yourself to others, take a break from social media for a while. Instead, spend that time writing in a journal or reading.
Start an accountability group.
Have a group of friends come over once a week and discuss goals. Have each person define their BIG goals and once a week discuss how things are going with moving toward that goal.
Do something you absolutely love to do.
If you love to paint, paint. If you love to cook or bake, do that. Whatever gives you extreme joy, do it now. When you release happy hormones, you can’t help but feel grateful and when you’re in a good mood you feel more motivated and you can focus. If you are trying to lose weight and you love to bake, you can always try a healthier sweet alternative or make a half batch of your sweet treat and only eat one portion of it and freeze the rest. I do that and it helps with portion control.
Repeat after me “ Do it now.”
You need to create a sense of urgency. Whenever you do any of the list from above, always follow it by “do it now.” Creating the sense of urgency will help your brain feel like “oh gosh, I gotta do this!” and you will get the task at hand done.
BONUS: You can also do a mixture of any of these on the list.
Figure out what works for you. If you try one thing and it doesn’t work, go to the next thing. The point is, when you get off track with one of your goals, take a little time to analyze what happened and try these methods to get you back on track.
If you need to rest or take a step away for a few days, do it. Sometimes that will actually give you more focus and clarity on how you should tackle the goal. Maybe you need rework your strategy. Just don’t give up especially if this goal is important to you. I know it is easy to feel like you have failed if you get off track, but in my experience, you only fail if you totally give up. The rest is just learning.
