If you have ever wanted to start a blog, this post is for you. I don’t plan on talking about blogging strategies on this platform, but blogging is a legitimate way to make extra money and for many of you, that’s what you are looking for. If you are a mom who wants to stay home with the kids or you have dreamed of having your own platform or business, blogging may be for you.
Blogging is a way to start your own business and catapult your way into other businesses such as freelance writing, blog design, advertising and much more. It truly is a very versatile platform and if you want to start something that is all your own, a blog is a cheap start up business that you can actually make money from.
Blogging is one of the businesses you can start for not much money which is a huge benefit. When I started my blog in December 2015, I wanted to create something of my own. I wanted a hobby that I was passionate about. I love to write and I love to help people so blogging seemed like a good choice for me. The only thing I wish I would have known was that I didn’t need to spend a ton of money on a blogging course. I spent $500 on the course I took and I didn’t need to when there were other great courses for much cheaper (one I took later, called Blog by Number which is only $47!) The course I took was good, but I felt like it was overwhelming and not as straight forward. Plus, I can’t justify telling people to spend $500 on a course, when there are other good ones for so much cheaper (that offer a ton of value!)
In this tutorial, I am going to walk you through how to start a blog whether on the Siteground hosting network. I cannot tell you how amazing Siteground is. I was using another hosting company in the past and I was not crazy about them at all. I ended up starting a new website for a party rental company that we own and started it directly on Siteground. I have been amazed at their customer service.
How to Start a Blog in 7 Easy Steps:
Choose a hosting network.
I was so confused by this initially. I suck at computers. Anything technology related I am pretty terrible at and it takes me longer to understand than the average person. Anyways, you want to be self hosted which means that you select a network that will host your space on the internet. There are tons to choose from. I recommend starting out with SiteGround (because their tech support is amazing!) It is very easy to use and they walk you through the steps you need to take in order to create your blog. They have great prices and you can start a blog for as little as $3.95 per month!
If you aren’t super techy, the support people at Siteground will help you out. I ended up switching my theme on my blog recently (because I like to change my mind) and they helped me create a subdomain to work on the design so my site would not be affected. Then they helped me transfer my design over to my main domain. It was awesome! I loved being able to take my time and create the look I wanted before having it go live. I ended up using the Divi theme from Elegant Themes. I have changed themes 3 times and I can honestly say that Divi is the easiest to use by far. It is so easy to customize. I actually have Divi installed on both websites (my blog and our rental company) because it is so customizable.
Once you go to Siteground, click on the plan you want. You can do the $3.95 plan or the Grow Big if you think you might start another site or grow quickly. We have the Grow Big because we have 2 sites.
Find your URL name
Also known as the Domain name. What space do you want to occupy on the internet? I ended up rebranding and changing the name of my blog a little over a year ago and I am glad I did. You can check right on the Siteground site to see if the Domain name you want is available. You get the Domain name included with Siteground and you get free emails which is a big deal so you don’t have to pay a monthly fee to have an firstname.lastname@example.org
After clicking on the basic plan, you can start searching for a domain name. In the box noted above, search and make sure the name you want isn’t taken. You are taken to this page after you select the package you want.
How do you know what name is right for you? That depends on what you want to blog about.
You can certainly use your name with a .com after it ( don’t do .net or anything like that, it confuses people).
Write down a list of things you will blog about and pull a name from what you come up with on the page. Think of synonyms or words that describe you. Grab a piece of paper and jot down any words that come to mind and put something together. You may have to try a combination of things to make sure the URL isn’t taken. Be creative. It’s fun to have your own identity on the internet.
After you pick a domain, you will be sent to a review and complete screen on Siteground where you enter your payment information. You can pay as little as $3.95 per month and just $47 for a blogging course to show you how to get a jump in growing your blog. If you want to buy a theme right away, Divi was $89 for a year but it is for unlimited sites which is awesome! We paid $89 for a theme for both of our sites which is a tremendous deal. You can also use a free theme which Suzi discusses in the Blog by Number course.
You want WordPress because all the major blogs use WordPress. If you plan on creating your blog to make money, you want WordPress. Plus, there are quite a few free themes to use which are really nice. If you are thinking “what the heck is a theme” don’t worry. Wordpress is pretty easy to understand. Remember, I am not very smart with computers and I figured it out. When you get set up with WordPress, they walk you through how to set up your theme.
Here is a video on how to install WordPress after you sign up with Siteground:
Create a look for your blog
Think about the font combinations you like and the colors you want to use. You can change those things pretty easily. You can als make your own logo for free if you are just starting out. You can use Canva or Picmonkey to make a very basic logo. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy initially. Suzi goes through how to use Picmonkey to create a logo in the Blog by Number course.
Start Writing on Your Blog
All you have to do is “Add New” post and you create a catchy little title and start writing your little heart out. If you love to write, this is the best part. You get to put yourself out there in your own space. It honestly was a little scary at first for me. People knew my business after I started talking about our finances, but the best part is I get to help people learn from our mistakes.
We all have separate voices and if you love to write, you get to share your knowledge and expertise with others and help them by what you know.
Start Promoting Your Blog.
If you want to create a business, start taking steps to learn more about social media. Pinterest is the best social media platform to learn about ASAP as it is the quickest way to get exposure to your blog. There is quite a bit to learn about how to market on social media, and that is where a blogging course can help save you time if you want to make money from your blog.
Monetize Your Blog.
If you want to make your blog a business, there are so many ways you can do this. I am still learning more and more ways to make money from my blog! The first thing I recommend you do is write some content for your blog that is helpful to others. If you want to concentrate on making money from your blog, at least you will have content set up and you can focus a little more on how to make money from your blog. It is really important to produce great content that readers find helpful in some way. Solve a problem.
Here is a list of 175 Ways to Make Extra Money. I am a firm believer in using stuff as an asset to propel your life into what you really want it to be. For me blogging is a hobby and a platform for one of my big goals which is to write a book. Blogging can be whatever you want it to be. It can be a hobby or you can make it a business and learn how to make money blogging. It is totally up to you.
Blogging can truly be life changing. You have the ability to help others and start your own business for not much money at all. If you look at the start up costs for other businesses, you will find that blogging is very inexpensive to begin and it can be very fun and rewarding. I started my blog as a way to help people with their finances and I do not regret that decision. I feel that this is a way for me to reach more people and to help others with something that may be very stressful in their lives. You can start a blog about anything though. Just have fun with it and make it unique to you.
