I love to drink coffee. No, like I really LOVE coffee. I love the delicious beverage because it is warm, calming, soothing, and it gives me a kick in the pants to start my day. Thank you, coffee. It’s just what I need in the morning to make it through my day… or to just make it through the morning with 2 energetic kids who can’t tell time and get up WAY TOO EARLY.
Sometimes I stare at my coffee pot and just think “thank You Jesus for this warm coffee.” Ok. I am sure you are sick of me talking about coffee and want me to get to the point.
Not only is coffee a spectacular morning (afternoon and evening) drink. There are actually some health benefits to the wonderful, warm splendor.
Health benefits of drinking coffee include:
Coffee has antioxidant properties. Basically antioxidants prevent damage to cells. There are a list of foods full of antioxidants and my friend coffee happens to be one of them that has these antioxidant properties. (Bonus!)
The smell of coffee can reduce stress. Stress related to sleep deprivation that is. Ok, either way, bring it on. This was based on a study in 2008 in Seoul National University in South Korea. I believe the hype. I know that just the smell of coffee can mellow me out.
Coffee can improve your mood. First hand, I know this. Nobody has to tell me this and I can bet if you have kids you know this too. Apparently there was a study at this little school called Harvard that found that coffee can boost some neurotransmitters in the brain and act like a mild anti-depressant.
Caffeine can improve athletic performance. What does coffee have in it? This glorious little particle called caffeine. Go ahead and drink your cup of warm goodness before your workout and you might just find that you are killing your workout.
It tastes good. I am sure I don’t have to tell you that. Yes, I use a little soy creamer and sugar in my coffee but hey, I gotta have something to look forward to in the morning.
It makes you smarter. I drink coffee. Greg does not. I won’t go any further with that. ( Love you babe.) But seriously, the caffeine jolt in the morning can help you stay focused throughout the day. Another great reason to indulge in a cup or 2 of Joe.
Coffee may help you lose weight. This is why I buy coffee in bulk. (Hi, Sam’s club, could I have a palette of coffee please?) Coffee can speed up the metabolism aiding in weight loss. Coffee does not bring you a svelte 20 year old body no matter how much you drink so don’t drink it like water. Weight loss takes work.
So why doesn’t everyone drink coffee? What reason would there be that there is one single person on this planet who does not cherish the beloved dark morning drink?
Well, for starters, some people don’t like the taste. I know, crazy right?
There may also be a few bad things about coffee so I will shed some light on those as well.
Reasons people choose not to drink coffee:
Some feel it has addictive properties. Uhum, Greg. My husband happens to feel this way so he stays away from coffee. He really doesn’t like the taste of it either. (He is one of those people.)
It can stain your teeth. Yeah, ok. I believe it can do this if you drink too much coffee. Just don’t drink too much.
It can cause heart rhythm issues. It can cause palpitations, or the feeling that your heart is not in normal rhythm. You may feel extra beats. Generally speaking, in most cases this is nothing to worry about, but if you have a heart rhythm condition, you need to be careful about how much caffeine you consume. Period. Too much coffee or caffeine can speed up the heart so take it easy.
Coffee can cause insomnia. Yes it can. If you drink it too close to bedtime or if you are hypersensitive to the effects of caffeine. Just be aware of what time of day you are drinking it and you will probably be ok.
Coffee can stunt your growth. This is BS. I started drinking coffee when I was like 5 and I am 5 foot 8 inches tall. Or maybe had I not drank coffee so early, I would be 6 foot 2. Hmmmm…
It can cause stomach problems. If you have ever had a very strong cup of Starbucks coffee and you had a little heartburn or your stomach felt like it was on fire, it could be all the caffeine they used in that cup of coffee. I personally have dealt with reflux before… no fun. So, yes, it can happen.
And there ya have it. The many reasons why coffee is oh so good and why I drink it. And I guess some reasons why some people would disagree with me.
You will have to make your own decision on whether or not being a coffee drinker is for you or not. Either way, it’s totally cool. I just thought I would let you in on some of the cool health benefits all of us coffee drinkers have when we indulge in our morning cup of java.
